That is an event dedicated to the secret gardens, litterally “ a countryside within the walls”: this is the Xth edition and it attracts garden lovers from all over the world.

Massa e Cozzile

This walk will bring you back to the Medieval Age while entering the old village of Massa: like many other villages of that era in Italy, it used to fenced by big walls, guarded by bell towers and only accessible from big and strong portals, with a castle on the highest point of it.
A nice museum of Sacred objects is visible in the village: once pasti t, the walk goes back up on the top of the village, where hidden by the olives there are the remains of the old medieval castle. The path rises up to the other village of Cozzile, where the wide panorama of Valdinievole valley is simply breathtaking.

GUIDED TOUR of the Castle of Montevettolini
The old village of Montevettolini, dating back to the XIIth century, is one of the defensive structures of the Montalbano hill, a natural barrier to the foreigners dominations throughout the centuries. This guided tour is developed on a ring path: after the observation of the countryside around the hill, the walk steps inside the village, in the main square and in front of the Church of San Michele. The Medici Villa at the top of the Montevettolini Hill is visible throughout the guided walk: at some point it is possible to locate the exact point from where LEONARDO DA VINCI realized the famous drawing “DISEGNO”, exhibited in Vinci from 15th April this year due to the 500 LEONARDO.
A little restoration will be provided inside the Palace of Podestà.

Chiesina Uzzanese

Visit of the Xenodochio Pilgrims hospital, located on an old branch of the Francigena road.
Chiesina Uzzanese was founded and developed around Medieval Age, as the only monument of that age testifies, that is the Xenodochio, a former pilgrims hospital.
This building was originally made by a church and a little area to provide hospitality to the pilgrims travelling to or from Rome. There are many Xenodochio pilgrims hospitals in europe, and the ethimology of the names comes from the ancient greek XENO = guest and DOCHEION = big number.

The church of Holy Mary of Loreto in Chiesanuova Uzzanese was built in the XVII century from a family of the village, willing to thank God for the vocation of one of their son to be a priest. Officially it was named a consecrated church in the 1671. Recent restoring works brought to the church new artworls such as the Portal with some sculptures from Amerigo Dorel about the life of Jesus and St Joseph.

The Palazzo PRETORIO palace, dating back to the XII century, shows on its facade many shields from XV and XVI century, and dominates the Valley Valdinievole.

The Gipsoteca (plaster cast) Libero Andreotti may be defined a museum of modern art, and represents quite a peculiar artistic event in Italy: counting more than 230 plasters directly donated by the author, this museum was indeed born because of the author’s family will.

This church belongs to the old diocesis of Pescia, and it was built on the XIII century, after the legend that says San Francisco passed from here at the time.
The church has got jus one navate with some chapels on the sides: on one of this the legendary wooden pale of San Francisco and his life from Berlinghieri, known worldwide because it was painted just 6 years after the death of the Saint, so it means the resemblance must be realistic, provided that the author met the Saint. Opening of the oldest medieval “Pieve” church of the area, fully rebuilt two centuries ago: a “Pieve” was a visible church on the top of a hill or mountain, with a considerably high bell tower to serve more villages in the nearbys of a mountain territory, where more often priests or bishops would come and serve for a Holy Mass. The visit may include the Oratory of Castelvecchio with some 1700 paintings and a scenic view over the valley.
