The town of Monsummano Terme developed around the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Fontenuova, built in 1602 along the Via Francigena. The Church is a typical example of Tuscan Baroque, due to the use of pietra serena, the structure with a single nave and the Latin cross plan. The municipality of Monsummano Terme originates from the aggregation of the hill communities of Monsummano Alto and Montevettolini, ancient fortified villages. The Castle of Monsummano Alto is the oldest nucleus of Monsummano and with its three hundred meters of height it predominates over the whole valley. The town of Montevettolini still consists today in the ancient fortress, situated on a hill.
