Serravalle is a city famous for its fortresses and fortifications. The first two fortresses were those of S. Maria and della Nievole, the New Fort was built by the Lucchese in 1302. in the 12th century the Commune of Pistoia had the castle of Serravalle fortified making it a strategic base during the war between the White and Black Guelphs . At the beginning of the fourteenth century Serravalle was besieged by the Lucchesi and subsequently conquered by the condottiere Castruccio Castracani, who also gave his name to a beautiful fortress of the city.
